6 Helpful Gardening Tips & Lessons To Help You Start Your Plant Mom Era

When we first bought our home I was determined to create a garden that would become my own little urban oasis. Sure, starting seemed like an impossible mission especially because our home was sitting on a giant dirt lot. Yup, dirt. There was no grass, no trees, nothing just dirt. After two years of hard work I can proudly say our yard is well on its way to becoming my own backyard retreat. And while it might seem like a daunting task at first, don’t worry! With a bit of patience, dedication, and a handful of essential tips, you’ll be well on your way to nurturing a thriving garden. Here are some lessons & tips I’ve learned that can help you kick-start your gardening adventure:

1. Choose the Right Plants for You!

As a beginner, it’s super important to start with plants that are well-suited to your climate and growing conditions. One key gardening tip many of us tend to ignore is research. Research which plants thrive in your region and pay attention to factors such as sunlight, soil type, and water requirements. Not only that, but take into consideration the time you’re willing to dedicate your plants. Opting for hardy and low-maintenance plants can be the perfect way to get your bearings.

2. Yes, Soil Really Does Matter!

Fluffy rich soil is key for growing strong healthy plants. Many people add compost to their garden, I do not. But we are fortunate to live in a city with the perfect soil conditions. However, I do sprinkle old coffee grounds and occasionally a potassium rich water I make with banana peels. It’s just extra nutrients for my pretties.

3. Give Your Plants the Sunlight They Need

Plants are not all the same. Some plants require full sun while others thrive under the shade of neighboring plants. Full-sun, partial-sun, and shade-loving plants each have their unique requirements. One strategy I use is I place tall sun loving plants and around those I place flowers and plants that thrive in shady moist environments. Bonus gardening tip you shouldn’t ignore: read the labels, or test how your plant does in different locations while it’s still in a pot before choosing a permanent spot. You’ll feel like a true plant mom when you find the best location for your plants.

4. Water Your Plants Wisely

Watering is an obvious step in gardening, but it’s so easy to overdo it. Avoid shallow and frequent watering. Doing so can result in root rot and weak root systems. Instead, water deeply and less often to encourage plants to develop deep roots that can access water from lower soil layers.

Watering is especially important for potted plants. You need to ensure that the pot can drain water well, but also retain the moisture your plant needs. This is where watering globes can come to your rescue.

Using Watering Globes

Watering globes are a super helpful tool every plant parent needs. These bulbs are filled with water and inserted into the soil near your plants. As the soil dries out, the globe releases water slowly, ensuring a consistent water supply directly to the roots. This not only reduces wasting water but also helps prevent under- or over-watering. These bulbs also help your plants stay hydrated while you’re away on vacation or on your busy days.

Here is the link to one of my favorite globes from Sunnydaze Decor. This watering globe has a terracotta clay spike that slowly seeps out water. But the best part, is that the globe can be easily filled from the top unlike other watering globes. This nifty little feature reduces water spills and ensures the globe is filled completely. As a bonus the watering globe is just beautiful! It’s like an added piece of art to my patio.

5. Mulch is Best!

Layering organic mulch, such as wood chips or straw, around your plants is incredibly helpful. Mulch helps the soil retain water, suppresses weed growth, and regulates soil temperature. This means less frequent watering and a healthier garden overall. This gardening tip saves you money & time by reducing water evaporation & less weed pulling time!🙌🏽

6. Regular Maintenance:

Dedicate time for regular maintenance tasks like weeding, pruning, and deadheading spent flowers. This not only keeps your garden looking neat but also encourages continuous blooming and healthy plant growth. Don’t be afraid of trimming back branches or training branches; they could use the support to grow strong and healthy.

And that’s all folks! I hope these tips help you gain the courage to begin your gardening journey today! Remember, embrace the journey, experiment with different techniques, and enjoy watching your garden flourish under your care.

Happy gardening!✨🪴🌱

Note: Watering globes can be especially helpful in maintaining consistent moisture levels, but it’s important to monitor your garden’s needs and adjust their usage as required.
