Easy Ways to Create Backyard Summer Fun Without Leaving Home

We are deep in the trenches of summer break, and I’m sure you’re already hearing a chorus of “I’m bored!” from the living room, like me. It’s easy to feel like you have to constantly book expensive day trips, fight traffic, or pack up the car just to keep everyone entertained. But some of the best childhood memories are made right at home. With a little creativity, you can transform your outdoor space into the ultimate destination for backyard summer fun.

Whether you want to keep the kids active during hot afternoons or create magical memories after the sun goes down, these 15 tried-and-true summer backyard ideas will help you make the most of your space all summer long.

The Ultimate Backyard Water Slide

If you want to keep the kids entertained for hours on end, bringing the water park home is a total game-changer. For the fourth year in a row, we busted out our favorite heavy-duty inflatable backyard water slide for the season, and it’s easily the centerpiece of our daytime setup. It’s the ultimate way to beat the heat without dealing with public pool crowds.

Backyard Ping Pong

Table tennis isn’t just for indoor rec rooms. Moving a ping pong table out to a shaded spot on the patio or lawn instantly creates a competitive hub for both kids and adults. It’s perfect for impromptu family tournaments while dinner is prepping. We bought this ping pong table two years ago, and it was one of the best purchases we could have made for our home.

Sprinkler Obstacle Courses

Don’t underestimate the classics. Set up a series of traditional lawn games like corn hole but place them directly in the path of a rotating lawn sprinkler. If you want to add a little whimsy, you can always buy one of those blow up sprinklers. We use this giant fire hydrant like this one.

Backyard Cooking

Summer entertaining is all about taking the mess outside and making weeknight meals feel like an event. Plus, on really hot days, I avoid using my kitchen at all. We own an older LA home so it does not have central air conditioning. So cooking outside is almost a necessity for us.

Al Fresco Theme Dinners

Turn a regular Tuesday into something special. Use your outdoor kitchen to host cozy dinner nights. Think a custom taco bar, a DIY slider-building station, or an outdoor hibachi night where the cooking doubles as the entertainment.

Magical Back Yard Camping

As much as I love sleeping on the floor in the middle of nowhere, it’s not always possible to squeeze a camping trip in. So why not camp in the backyard! Setting up a tent on the lawn for a night of back yard camping gives you all the stargazing and fresh-air vibes of a real camping trip. With the massive bonus of a clean private bathroom just steps away.

Cozy Backyard Movie Night

Turn your patio into a private drive-in. With a budget-friendly portable projector, a plain white sheet or pull-up screen, and a pile of outdoor cushions, you can host a relaxing backyard movie night under the stars.

Simple, Low-Prep Creative Fun

You don’t need a massive piece of gear to keep busy. These simple summer backyard ideas are perfect for filling those awkward gaps between lunch and dinner.

 Next-Level S’mores Stations

Whether you are roasting marshmallows over a real fire pit or a safe tabletop solo stove, a s’mores night is the quintessential summer finale. Take it up a notch by creating a “s’mores charcuterie board” with graham crackers, fudge stripes, peanut butter cups, and cookies ‘n’ cream bars.

DIY Popcorn Shaker Bar

Perfect for pairing with your outdoor movie night! Pop a massive batch of popcorn, put it in brown paper lunch bags, and set out a “shaker station” with different seasonings—like cinnamon sugar, white cheddar powder, M&Ms, and pretzels so everyone can mix their own custom snack.

Giant Lawn Games

Bring giant versions of classic games out to the grass. Giant wooden Jenga, yard Yahtzee (using large wooden dice and a bucket), or a giant Connect Four set are fantastic because they can stay out on the patio all summer long for quick, spontaneous play.

Sidewalk Chalk Murals & Games

Don’t underestimate the power of a fresh bucket of sidewalk chalk. Turn the walls or patio into a giant art zone. You can draw tic tac toe, hangman, or just get creative and draw.
