The Invisible Weight: Why Spider-Man Brand New Day Broke Me (Spoiler-Free)

We are HUGE Marvel Universe fans in our home. We have watched every single movie on opening weekend since 2011. This weekend we went to watch “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and it was complete emotional damage! I was on the verge of sobbing so many times. I couldn’t even eat my popcorn because I had a knot in my throat for the entirety of the film. Don’t worry, I WILL NOT reveal major plot twists, deaths, or cameos! This is a 100% spoiler-free zone! This was not just a movie, it was a beautiful depiction of how we carry and deal with the invisible weight of life.

The Sensory Overload Scene

Not gonna give away why, but Peter’s senses become excruciatingly overloaded. Sounds all seem to bleed together and seem to peak at the same volume. If you’ve ever been in a state of hypervigilance or panic, you’ve felt this before. I know I have. So much so I find myself having to take moments to catch my breath and give my brain time to catch up and process the sounds and environment around me. It’s such a horrible feeling, but it was beautifully captured in this movie.

I felt so seen and understood at that moment. I definitely don’t relate to the super hero aspect, but I do relate to the emotional instability of it all, LOL .

The Very Real Weight of Masking

If Spider-Man feels the need to mask then what hope do regular people have? All jokes aside, this is very real for a lot of us parents. We try to be strong for our kids even when life is flinging us around like the Hulk did Loki in Avengers. We do our best to hide and act “normal” for the sake of their happiness and innocence. But the truth is we can only mask for so long, that weight gets heavier and heavier with each passing day. And we can’t carry it all alone. It’s okay to ask for help and let the mask drop for just a second.

Why This is The Best Marvel Movie Yet

This is a hill I am willing to die on, Spider-Man: Brand New Day was the best Marvel Universe movie yet. Take away all of the action packed fight scenes, and the incredible cinematography, but the character depth. The way we were able to feel and relate to the characters is exactly what great movies are supposed to do. Like my kids say, this movie was peak cinema!

When you go watch the new Spider-Man Movie

My most important recommendation is that you take some tissues, or grab napkins before you sit down. Oh, and make sure you go to the restroom too because the movie is a bit over 2 hours long, and you don’t want to miss a thing. And if you’re feeling somewhat overwhelmed with life lately, give yourself some grace and remember you don’t have to do it alone.
