7 Reasons Why You Should Declutter Your Home Regularly

Let’s be honest, mamas. We juggle a million things every day, from tantrum tornadoes to grocery list marathons. And amidst the chaos, there’s one thing that seems to multiply like gremlins: STUFF. But here’s the thing – that ever-growing pile of stuff can actually steal our joy. Clutter, my friend, is the master thief of time and sanity. But fear not! The antidote is here, and it’s called decluttering. Join me as we explore 7 reasons why saying “hasta la vista, clutter!” is the ultimate act of self-love and a great way to inject some peace and calm into your everyday life.

1. Decluttering Frees Up Physical and Mental Space:

Stuff has a way of accumulating over time, occupying both physical and mental space. Decluttering your home enables you to let go of unnecessary items, freeing up both your living space and your mind. The result? A sense of liberation and room for new possibilities. Ahh, the freedom!

2. Boost Productivity:

I don’t know about you, but I have such a hard time focusing on important tasks when my house is a mess. And I work from home, so that’s a pretty big problem! They say a cluttered space often leads to a cluttered mind, and I wholeheartedly believe that. When your surroundings are organized, it becomes easier to concentrate and be productive. Keeping your home relatively clutter-free helps eliminate distractions so you can  focus on the important things. Whether that’s work or hanging out with the family.

3. Spark Joy, Find Focus & Creativity:

Marie Kondo’s famous question, “Does it spark joy?” is a powerful decluttering tool. When you surround yourself with items you love and use, your home becomes a source of inspiration and focus. Let go of the things that no longer resonate, and watch your creativity and productivity blossom.

4. Decluttering Helps You Save Money &  Consume Less:

When you declutter your home, you often find hidden treasures you forgot you had. For example, the toys! I found that by going through the toy chest and removing broken or outgrown toys regularly I buy less toys for the kids! Why? Well, because that Barbie I dug out hasn’t been played with for months, so it feels like a brand new toy to them! Decluttering also encourages mindful consumption, as you become more aware of what you truly need and value.

Bonus tip: Add decluttering the toy chest to your child’s chore list. You can have them sort out broken toys or toys they no longer want! They learn some good habits & you get a little extra help.

5. Breathe Easier, Literally:

Dust, allergens, and even pests thrive in cluttered spaces. By decluttering and deep cleaning, you create a healthier environment for yourself and your family. Breathe deeply, knowing you’re in a space that supports your well-being. As a person who suffers from both asthma and allergies, I can attest that decluttering and deep cleaning regularly, has made a huge difference for me. Especially during bedtime!

6. Declutter Your Home to Create a Serene Living Space:

A cluttered home can feel chaotic and unwelcoming. When you declutter your home it creates a sense of order and serenity, transforming your home into a sanctuary for relaxation and connection. In today’s fast-paced world, the importance of mindful living at home cannot be overstated. Amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life, finding moments of intentional presence becomes increasingly valuable, especially within the sanctuary of our own homes – whether it’s an apartment in Minneapolis, MN, or a rental home in Wichita, KS, or anywhere else in the world. 7. Gift Yourself Time:

Decluttering your home is an act of self-care, giving yourself the gift of a peaceful and organized space and mind. It’s also a gift to your future self, saving you time, money, and energy in the long run. As you let go of what no longer serves you, you make space for new experiences and growth.

Quick Tip:

Ask yourself these two questions when you’re struggling to get rid of stuff while you declutter your home.

From Ms. Marie Kondo “ Does it Spark Joy?”.

If the answer is no, then let it go. You can read more about Marie’s tactics for tidying up in her book, The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. (This link is an affiliate link, which means I may earn a small commission if you purchase through it.)

When was the last time you used it?

If it’s not a seasonal item, and you haven’t used it in more than 6 months, it’s time to say goodbye. If you’ve gone this long without it, you clearly don’t need it.

Remember, decluttering your home is a journey, not a destination. Start small, celebrate your progress, and enjoy the process of creating a home that reflects your authentic self. Breathe easy, live light, and happy decluttering!
