Hiking the Ice House Canyon Trailhead

Our family loves to hike, but since we moved to Pomona last October, we hadn’t really had a chance to explore the area. So we made the effort to find a good hiking trail near us. And we found exactly that! Just a couple weeks ago we went on this amazing hike, The Ice House Canyon Trailhead, in Mt Baldy. Mt Baldy is located just a few miles outside of the city, not far at all, but sure feels like you left the city far behind when you’re there.

We went in the middle of January and it was a cold! Such a cold and windy day that we were not prepared for at all! But, we were too excited to turn back so we braved the cold and headed on the trail. We gladly wore our masks that day! Our masks served for more than protection from Covid-19, they shielded our faces from the cold gusts of wind that blew through the canyon that morning, but it felt good. I mean, just the fact we were out felt amazing.

About the trail

The Ice House Canyon Trailhead is a winding rocky trail with both desert plants, big oak, and sycamore trees. There is a creek that runs through the canyon filled with crystal clear water. The calming sounds of the tumbling water follow you through the hike as it makes it’s way down the canyon.

At the start of the trail you will walk past the remnants of a few old recreational cabins, along with the stone foundations of a few more. These ruins add a touch of history from the early days of Los Angeles.

Past the cabins you will begin to find yourself in a less traveled trail with less and less trails of humanity leaving you at one with the nature around you. There was lots of life including swarms of lady bugs near the creek. It was a new sight for us all so naturally the girls wanted to get close to them.

The trail is definitely not jogger stroller friendly, but a good baby carrier would suffice. I wouldn’t say the trail is difficult, but it is not a flat trail. There are switchbacks and even more so the higher your go. And some of the paths along the side of the mountain get narrow, but only in short stretches. The hike can be very long, but since we were not prepared, my family and I only went about 2 miles into the Canyon this time.

If you take this hike during winter months after snowfall or rain to I suggest you wear proper gear.  Even if there isn’t snow you will definitely run into icy spots throughout the hike. We hit a couple of icy spots in the narrow parts of the hike and through the creeks. A regular pair of running shoes will not cut it, you’re safer if you’re wearing proper hiking boots. Also, wear warm clothing because it gets cold up there.

We definitely recommend this trail, it is a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of our city lives. Hiking is a good way to let the mind rest and get your blood pumping. We always appreciate unplugging for a quick hike on a weekend.

Have fun out there!
