A SoCal Snow Day: Sledding & Snowball Fights at the Top of the Palm Springs Tramway
There is a certain kind of magic that only exists in Southern California. One minute you can be sipping on iced coffee under palm trees in 75 degree temperatures and the next you’re stepping into a pine scented winter wonderland. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is one of those “only in California” experiences that make living in the golden state so great. Visiting the Palm Springs Tramway during the winter is an easy way to get your snow fix while also living a totally unique California experience. Whether you’re planning a unique date activity with your significant other or planning a snow day with the kids, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway snow is an experience you’ll never forget.
Know Before Visiting the Palm Spring Tramway
Before you head out, I highly recommend that you buy your Palm Springs Aerial Tramway tickets online ahead of time to avoid being turned away at the gate especially during peak season. There are a few parking lots at the bottom of the mountain, but during winter they do tend to fill up quickly. Arrive early so you can get a good parking spot and be prepared to take the free shuttle to the main entrance. Expect a significant temperature drop between the lower level Valley Station and the mountain station. Even if it’s shorts weather in the parking lot, trust me, it’ll be parka weather at the top.

The Ascent Aboard the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway
Being aboard the tramway was a surreal experience. You’ll board the largest rotating tramcar in the world. The tramcar rotates slowly providing a full 360 degree view during your 10 minute ascent. Allowing you to really take in the dramatic views of the Chino Canyon cliffs. As you make your way to the top of the mountain not only do you get stunning views of the desert landscape below, but you also get to watch the vegetation change from cacti to pine trees. It’s such an incredible experience.

First Stop, The Winter Adventure Center
The Winter Adventure Center is where you can rent equipment including sleds, skis, and snowshoes. However keep in mind these rentals are limited while supplies last. You can also find shops where you can purchase sleds, gloves, and other things you might need or have forgotten. We bought a little sled there and some gloves. We still have the sled too! The Adventure Center is also where you get your permits if you’re planning on leaving the Long Valley area for skiing, snow shoeing, and even camping. I won’t be doing all that, but if that’s your thing be safe and have fun!
What to Wear to the Palm Springs Tramway in Winter
Do not underestimate the weather at the Tram, it is cold and the ground is covered in many inches of snow. You’re going to want to dress in layers with the top layer being a waterproof jacket. Don’t wear your sneakers, your feet will be soaked and freezing. Wear waterproof boots and thick warm socks. You might also want to take a beanie to stay nice and cozy. And don’t forget to take waterproof gloves or mittens so you can enjoy playing in the snow. Emphasis on the waterproof, we’ve forgotten ours before and very quickly feel the pins and needles all over our hands.

Warm Up While Dining with a View
After playing in the snow head inside to the Mountain Station to warm up and grab a bite. You can grab a quick bite at Pines Cafe, a casual cafeteria style dining spot. You can also get a table at Peaks Restaurant for a more formal dining served with a side of stunning mountain views. And you can also grab a cocktail at Lookout Lounge before heading back down the sky tram.
Pro-Tip: Always check the Tramway’s live webcam on their official website before you get on the road. It’s the best way to see what conditions you can expect when you arrive at the top of the mountain.
